Leo is kickstarting his career, drawing on the critical thinking and research skills he acquired during his studies at NMBU.

Name: Leo Alfredo Ruiz Montes

Job: Environmental and Social Risk Executive

Study Programme: International Environment and Development Studies

Completed studies at NMBU: 2024

Could you tell us a little about yourself and your current role? How did your career path lead you there?

I’m Leo Ruiz Montes, a young and enthusiastic professional born and raised in Nicaragua. I graduated from NMBU in 2024, and I currently work as an Environmental and Social Risk Executive, where I manage and analyze the environmental and social risks of the commercial portfolio of a regional private bank.

What attracted you to your programme at NMBU?

NMBU caught my attention primarily because of the structure of the bachelor's program in International Environment and Development Studies. I had always wanted to pursue a degree that interconnected the social, economic, and environmental sciences. Previously, I was studying economics, but I felt that something was missing. The bachelor’s degree at NMBU met my expectations and provided the interdisciplinary approach I was looking for.

What was the most rewarding or memorable part of your studies?

From the beginning of the program, it was an incredible experience. Being on a beautiful campus, surrounded by natural spaces and a vibrant international community, helped me a lot in adapting to a new country. However, the most memorable part of my studies was the fieldwork in Tanzania for the course EDS210. Being able to put into practice all the knowledge we received from our professors at NMBU, and seeing how it applies to the realities of developing countries, was one of the best experiences of my time at NMBU.

How did you experience the academic and social environment at NMBU?

NMBU has a vibrant student community with many groups you can join, and for me, this was important because it helped me get to know my classmates and fellow students from the university. During my time at NMBU, I was able to participate in social activities without sacrificing my studies.

How do you use the knowledge or skills you acquired during your studies in your current job?

The variety of courses I took at NMBU gave me several skills that I believe have helped me work and adapt to different workplace settings. Currently, as an Environmental and Social Risk Executive, I think the most important skills I gained from NMBU are critical thinking and research experience. These skills help me structure and carry out my work, especially in countries where environmental legislation is not yet highly developed.

What further career plans do you have?

For the future, I plan to pursue an MSc in International Development and continue working closely with development agencies and institutions. I also do not rule out the possibility of focusing my career on research or pursuit a Phd.

What advice would you give to current or future students?

My advice to future NMBU and especially Noragric students is to truly enjoy your time at the university. Don’t be afraid to explore new subjects, new perspectives, and new ways of thinking. Embrace change, be open to learning from different viewpoints, and take advantage of the openness and approachability of the professors. Reach out to them they are there to support you.
