Et sosialt bærekraftig lokalsamfunn kan beskrives som et sted der mennesker ønsker å bo, nå og i fremtiden. For å oppnå sosialt bærekraftige samfunn må vi derfor ha kunnskap om menneskers behov, hvordan fysiske omgivelser og psykososiale faktorer påvirker menneskers liv, og hvordan samfunnsstrukturer påvirker muligheten til en rettferdig fordeling av goder og tjenester, integrering og deltakelse. 

Forskningsgruppen har omfattende kompetanse innen ulike epidemiologiske metoder og bruk av geografiske informasjonssystemer (GIS).  Forskergruppen har også høy kompetanse på ulike typer review metodikk, samt kvalitative metoder. 

• Betydning av nærmiljø for helse og livskvalitet

  Nærmiljøet er en viktig arena i folkehelsearbeidet og favner de fysiske og sosiale omgivelsene der vi lever og bor, enten det er i byer og tettsteder eller spredtbygde strøk. Vi forsker på hvordan fysiske faktorer som boliger og boligområder, natur og grøntområder, møteplasser, vei- og transportinfrastruktur, kjøpesenter, fasiliteter og institusjoner som skoler og barnehager virker inn på folks muligheter til å delta i hverdagslivets aktiviteter, og hvordan kvaliteter ved det fysiske miljøet som omgir oss bidrar til å fremme helse og livskvalitet i ulike grupper av befolkningen. Videre er vi interessert i å forstå samspillet mellom fysiske omgivelsesfaktorer og sosiale aspekter som trygghet, tillit, tilhørighet, sosial støtte og sosial kapital, for å kunne utvikle sosialt bærekraftige nærmiljø og lokalsamfunn.

  Biologiske, kjemiske og fysiske miljøfaktorer kan ha en innvirkning på menneskers helse. Forskningsgruppen er involvert i prosjekter som utforsker hvordan eksponering for ulike miljøfaktorer fordeler seg i henhold til sosioøkonomisk status, hvordan luftforurensing og støy påvirker helse, sammenhenger mellom radoneksponering og kreft, samt betydning av plantevernmidler for helse.

  Innvandrere utgjør en voksende del av den norske befolkningen og har generelt høyere risiko enn andre for ulike helseutfordringer.  Helse og livskvalitet blant innvandrere påvirkes av faktorer både før, under og etter migrasjon.
  
  I Norge kan lav sosioøkonomisk status, arbeidsløshet, sosial isolasjon, språkutfordringer, lav helsekompetanse, og diskriminering være barrierer for god helse og livskvalitet. Dette kan også påvirke helse blant deres etterkommere. Vi forsker på hvordan helsen er i ulike grupper av innvandrere og deres etterkommere, hva som kan fremme helse og livskvalitet og hvordan helsefremmende og forebyggende tiltak kan treffe bedre i innvandrerbefolkningen for å sikre et sosialt bærekraftig samfunn.

  I Norge er det store og økende sosiale forskjeller i helse og i enkelte lokalsamfunn er det en opphopning av levekårsutfordringer. Levekår omfatter mange ulike faktorer, som for eksempel økonomiske, sosiale, fysiske, kulturelle og miljømessige forhold, som påvirker  helse og livskvalitet. Barn som vokser opp i  områdermed levekårsutfordringer er spesielt utsatt for utfordringer videre i livet. Det er viktig   å få mer kunnskap om hvordan områdesatsninger kan styrke levekårsutsatte områder for å bedre  oppvekstsvilkårene til de som bor der.
