NMBU alumni, Abdul Kadir Khan, wants to make a significant contribution within the field of Development Studies. Reflecting on his time at NMBU, Abdul praises the education he received.

A multidisciplinary perspective
Abdul completed his master’s in International Development Studies at NMBU. During his time at campus, he had an opportunity to learn from various courses. They were instrumental in gaining a multidisciplinary perspective. The connections he made at NMBU continue to influence his professional journey today.
NMBU offers valuable experiences
As an international student from Bangladesh, Abdul found the Norwegian education system to be different yet exceptional in terms of quality. NMBU offered him the flexibility to take various courses and choose the right path for specialisation, which significantly enhanced his independence. The transferable skills he gained from these courses played a crucial role in his decision to study in Norway.
“The student community, particularly the activities organized by SiÅs and other student organizations, was remarkable. I had the opportunity to meet students from various countries, which enriched my understanding of different cultures and people.”
Abdul explains that the international food events on campus were important to his experiences. It added to the diverse student life, and overall, he found his time at NMBU to be filled with valuable life lessons and unforgettable experiences.

Encourages independence
During his time at NMBU, Abdul says that he was provided a strong foundation for his career.

Works in Finland
After completing his master’s degree at NMBU, he moved on to an MPhil degree at the University of Oslo in Peace and Conflict Studies.
He has also worked with the Norwegian Center for Holocaust and Minority Studies, where he collaborated and created a policy brief with Dr. Ellen E. Stendsrud. His ultimate goal is to become a researcher and make significant contributions in the field of development studies.
Now, Abdul has just completed his PhD in Development Studies at the University of Jyäskylä. The title of his PhD is “Localization of humanitarian action: Exploring the views of organizations involved in the Rohingya response in Bangladesh”.
“I’m particularly interested in exploring the dynamics of the localization of humanitarian action and the Humanitarian-Development-Peace nexus in protracted crisis situations.”
By focusing on these areas, Abdul aims to develop insights and solutions that can improve the effectiveness and sustainability of humanitarian efforts in complex environments in the future.
