User regulation at Centre for Plant Research in Controlled Climate (SKP)

All users of facilities that are subject to SKP Klima must always follow these user regulations, SKP’s HSE routines, and follow instructions from SKP’s employees. SKP expects that people who are given responsibility for daily care and follow-up of trials have the necessary specialist knowledge for such work. Users responsible for daily plant care must be qualified for the job. The user must have completed the NMBU’s mandatory HSE training, as well as SKP’s fire protection routine, before working in SKP’s facilities.

The following main points apply:

  1. Necessary information about any ongoing experiment is to be applied to a door poster near the entrance to the experimental facility. The door poster must be filled in and updated by the user. The information therein will govern technical and biological surveillance. SKP cannot be held responsible for errors that occur because of missing or not updated door posters.
  2. Users must themselves ensure daily order and cleanliness in and around the experimental areas. Waste and plant waste must be thrown in designated places.
  3. Use of temporary installations in the experimental facilities must be approved by SKP in advance. When using temporary installations without approval, SKP reserves the right to dismantle if we believe safety is at risk. When using equipment such as sulfur burners, autoclaves and more which involve an HSE risk, the user must have completed the training and carried out a risk assessment before use.
  4. All plant material entering the facilities must be free from pests. In experiments involving harmful pests, the necessary measures must be carried out in consultation with SKP.
  5. All care of experimental material (supervision, watering, fertilizing, plant protection, etc.) is normally the user’s responsibility, unless otherwise agreed with SKP. In all indoor facilities we offer a biological guard service that is responsible for watering av Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays. Users are responsible for providing the necessary information to the biological guard (via the door poster and the guard binder).
  6. All use of pesticides must be carried out in accordance with applicable laws and regulations, and by people with an approved authorization certificate. Those carrying out the work must make sure that the pesticides cannot harm other experiments in surrounding facilities. When using pesticides, other surrounding people who will be in or near ongoing experiments, must also be informed in advance.
  7. All containers containing pesticides must be labeled and stored in a designated place in accordance with the applicable laws and regulations.
  8. SKP guarantees the functionality of the fixed lighting systems in the facilities. Other lighting equipment must only be used in consultation with SKP before the experiment starts. Any additional costs must be covered by the user. It is the user's responsibility to ensure the measurement and adjustment of the desired amount of light in collaboration with SKP.
  9. The user must themselves obtain all operating resources that are necessary for carrying out the experiments. SKP do not allow bringing in plants from the outside, or outside soil into our facilities. Only approved growth media must be used.
  10. At the end of the trial, the user is responsible for cleaning and washing the rental objects they have used. In case the rental object has not been cleaned to a satisfactory level SKP will perform a washing and cleaning and invoice the user NOK 1500 for the first hour, then according to the current list price per hour.
  11. When using genetically modified organisms, approval from the Norwegian Directorate of Health must be submitted and registered by SKP before the experiments start. The user must have completed training and have had a review of procedures and routines with SKP before the trial is initiated.
  12. The user has a duty to report to SKP as soon as possible if they notice any critical errors or if deficiencies occur in the facility.
  13. When trials and projects carried out at SKP’s facilities are mentioned in media, social media and public mention, SKP must be recognized as the supplier of infrastructure and services.
  14. Data and metadata stored in SKP’s climate management systems are SKP’s property.

Contact SKP’s staff if you need more information. SKP’s on-call phone service (970 94 576) is manned 24 hours a day and can be used at any time if errors or deficiencies are detected.
