The NovelPol project deals with scientific characterisation of sources, dispersion and exposure processes for novel organic pollutants of different organic wastes originating but not limited to households, agriculture, fisheries, sewage treatment etc.

  • LIn a sustainable bioeconomy [1, 2], recycling of both non-renewable and renewable nutrients from organic residues will be imperative. There is a huge diversity in organic residues depending on their origin and/or the type of process involved in their production. Application of organic residues as soil amendment and fertilizer will recycle the nutrients contained in the residues but may also imply a dispersal of contaminants on agricultural soils. From soils, contaminants may be absorbed into food and fodder plants, ultimately resulting in animal and human exposure, or further spread in the environment with negative consequences also for other ecosystems [3]. Many knowledge gaps still exist on how to treat issues like persistent organic pollutants (POPs) or contaminants of emerging concern (CEC).

  • Main objective: The main objectives of the NovelPol project are (1) to evaluate the fate of novel organic pollutants from recycling of modern organic residues in agriculture on the environment and ultimately human exposure and (2) recommend risk management strategies in order to mitigate the environmental dispersal of contaminants of concern.
