About the arena

• Background

  The health of humans, animals, and ecosystems is increasingly shaped by interacting global pressures, such as climate change, biodiversity loss, pollution, food-system intensification, and emerging infectious diseases. These drivers operate across biological, ecological, and societal scales, resulting in feedback that amplifies risks and complicates control measures, sometimes throwing up unexpected consequences. Despite growing recognition of these interdependencies, research and governance responses remain largely sectoral and fragmented, often addressing isolated symptoms rather than the systemic interactions that determine health outcomes. Addressing such complex challenges therefore requires an interdisciplinary approach, in which the interfaces between multiple perspectives (ecological, veterinary, medical, biological, environmental, social, economic, etc.) are in focus.

• Objective

  The One Health Forum aims to operationalize NMBU’s strategic ambition by creating an open platform that mobilizes complementary expertise across all faculties. By integrating biological, environmental, social, economic, technological, and veterinary perspectives, the Forum provides a shared systems-thinking framework for addressing complex health challenges across humans, animals, and ecosystems. It strengthens interdisciplinary collaboration by connecting research environments across environmental sciences, molecular and biological disciplines, food and veterinary sciences, ecology, technology, and the social sciences, helping identify common priorities, methodological synergies, and coordinated approaches to external funding.

  The Forum also works to enhance NMBU’s external visibility and collaborative reach, positioning the university as an attractive partner in national and international One Health initiatives. Through coordinated outreach and engagement, it contributes to long-term capacity building for integrated One Health research in Norway. In addition, the Forum supports researcher education and competence development by offering opportunities for students and early-career researchers to engage in transdisciplinary work and systems-thinking approaches, helping train a new generation equipped to address emerging One Health challenges.

• Activities

  The Forum brings NMBU’s faculties together to spark interdisciplinary collaboration, develop systems‑thinking research proposals, support student training, and strengthen engagement with stakeholders and society. Its activities create regular meeting points, shared learning opportunities, and pathways for joint research initiatives.
