Emnets innhold:
Foreign policy is a strategy that allow states to address various interests in international relations. Combining a discussion on theoretical and historical perspectives, this course will introduce key concepts in the study of foreign policy and the schools of thought that frame foreign policy strategies. Through the examination of case studies, the students will be able to understand how great powers and small states use foreign policy to achieve economic, political and national security objectives. We will explore how diplomacy and decision making function through foreign policy to address complex issues of global governance, security and various domestic and international agendas.

1. The students will obtain a deeper understanding of foreign politics.

2. The students will be able to explain the role of diplomacy and foreign policy tools of power.

3. The students will gain an understanding of diffrent foreign policies, and will be able to discuss the diffrence between foreign policies of superpowers vs. regional and small powers.

To be eligible for a grade in the course the student must:

1. Understand the principles of academic integrity and have submitted a signed plagiarism declaration.

2. Participate 75% of the lectures.

3. Be present, participate and pass all class assignments, exercises and seminars as specified by the main teacher at the beginning of the semester.

Semesteroppgave(15 sider) teller 50%, og avsluttende skriftlig eksamen teller 50% for avsluttende karakter. Eksamen og semesteroppgave kan kun besvares på engelsk.

Normert arbeidsmengde:
300 timer
26 timer forelesning, 22 seminartimer, 252 timer til individuelt arbeid og skriving av semesteroppgave. Total normert arbeidstid 300 timer.
