The bachelor program in economics gives increased insight into how the economy works and how scarce resources can be allocated in an efficient and sustainable way. You will develop an understanding of the interconnection of the use of natural resources, labor, production equipment and technology, to satisfy human needs through the production of goods and services with the aim to increase welfare in society. The program explores why and how production and consumption are organized differently in different countries at different times, and how resources are allocated between groups and individuals today and over time. You will also learn how governments affect and can affect production, consumption, equity and pollution through policies.

Career opportunities

The programme qualifies students for admission to master`s degree programmes in Norway and abroad. At NMBU students can apply to the master`s programmes in Applied Economics and Sustainability, Economics and Environmental Governance and Global Economy and Politics. Graduates from the bachelor`s programme can seek employment in a broad range of fields, such as in different governmental offices, environmental politics, development aid, business development, agricultural administration or economic analysis.

  • Program structure

    The study program comprises a mandatory theoretical and methodological core of 135 credits. This structure ensures that the program maintains a high standard comparable to economics programs at other Norwegian educational institutions and the international standard of a 'Bachelor in Economics.' The curriculum provides fundamental knowledge in subjects such as macroeconomics, microeconomics, mathematics, statistics, econometrics and programming.

    Students have the option to choose the profile in Environmental, Climate, and Energy Economics or create their own profile. As elective courses, students can select from various fields including economics, business administration, organization and management, development studies, law, natural sciences, or technology. By choosing the appropriate elective courses students can also qualify for admission to a masters programme in business administration (siviløkonom).

    Throughout the program, students have the opportunity to spend one or two semesters abroad.

    A candidate who has completed the education is expected to have achieved the following learning outcomes:

    Knowledge

    • Has broad knowledge of concepts and fundamental models within micro- and macroeconomics.
    • Has fundamental knowledge in mathematics, statistics, and econometrics, with an understanding of how methodological tools can be used when collecting, organizing, and analyzing data
    • Have knowledge of how historical, institutional and political framework conditions affect society, markets and the economy
    • Has knowledge of the UN's Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), their interrelationships, and how they relate to economics.

    Skills

    • Can apply socio-economic theories, methods, and findings from research and development to economic problems.
    • Can locate, assess, and integrate relevant literature from various fields to illuminate socio-economic issues.
    • Can identify and analyze economic instruments to develop policies that can contribute to achieving the SDGs
    • Ability to carry out thorough cost-benefit analyses where sustainability is also central.
    • Can explain how scarce resources can be used in a sustainable and efficient way while considering distribution issues.
    • Has the ability to collect and process complex data for use in cost-benefit analysis and models using modern programming languages (e.g., R) and data processing tools.

    General Competence

    • Can plan and execute diverse tasks and projects that extend over time, independently and as part of a group, even within a multidisciplinary context.
    • Can convey and share knowledge of fundamental economic theory, analyses, methodological approaches, findings, and assumptions, both in writing and orally.
    • Has insight into environmental and ethical standards and is able to act in accordance with them.

  • Exchange possibilities

    It is recommended that the student participates in an exchange program. There are excellent opportunities to take elective subjects, some mandatory courses, and assignments at our partner universities. Exchange are recommended to be completed during the 5th and/or 6th semester.     • Societal relevance

    • Learning activities

      The courses included in the program use a diverse set of pedagogical approaches including traditional lectures, group- and teamwork, case studies, excursions and field trips and digital learning tools. There is a focus on student centered learning.

    • Examination

      Individual courses in the program use a range of different assessment methods including semester assignments, project reports, peer review, presentations, and exams. All assessments are constructively aligned with each course’s learning outcomes, and courses in the program are selected such that they together meet the learning outcomes of the program. Assessments in courses are such that students will meet a variety of different assessment methods throughout the program.

    • Equipment

      In this study program we use computers in learning situations and on exams. Therefore every student must have their own laptop, cf. The Academic Regulations for the Norwegian University of Life Sciences § 17-4.
