  • Program structure

    The program consists of 160 compulsory and 20 optional credits. The compulsory part consists of courses in business analysis, economics, marketing, HR and corporate strategy subjects, informatics, mathematics, statistics ethics, social responsibility, and sustainability. Great emphasis is placed on holistic understanding, practical application, interdisciplinarity and integration of sustainability. It satisfies the requirements for admission to the master's program in business (Master of Science) at NMBU and similar institutions in Norway. You may also take courses at other NMBU faculties or avail yourself of an exchange semester at one of some 40 universities abroad (spring second or third year).

    Upon completion of the program, candidates should have achieved the following learning outcomes at the program level:

    KNOWLEDGE
    The candidate:

    • has broad knowledge of economics, business administration, information technology, management, and innovation
    • has knowledge of key information technologies and business models, the implications of technological innovation and new business models, as well as ethical and sustainability challenges in economics and business administration
    • has broad knowledge of mathematics, statistics, empirical methods, and programming
    • has detailed knowledge of how data and data science can be applied to business decision-making
    • is familiar with research and development within relevant areas of economics, business administration, and data science

    SKILLS
    The candidate:

    • can use information technology to collect, transform, analyze, and apply relevant data
    • can apply theories and methods from economics, business administration, and data science to analyze problems and recommend decisions
    • can utilize programming to enhance value creation
    • can communicate relevant issues in economics, business administration, management, and technology in various formats and to diverse audiences

    GENERAL COMPETENCE
    The candidate:

    • understands the role of innovation and creativity in technology-driven companies and their relevance to society
    • can consider sustainability, social, and ethical issues in decision-making within economics and business administration
    • can plan and execute tasks and projects both individually and in teams, and reflect on their own and others’ performance

    Students at NMBU School of Economics and Business are encouraged to take parts of their Bachelor`s degree at a foreign university to facilitate academic and personal development. NMBU School of Economics and Business has several agreements with recognized universities in many parts of the world. It also maintains extensive academic networks with international institutions and advisers. The Staff of NMBU School of Economics and Business will always help students find appropriate institutions abroad, independent of existing agreements. The bachelor`s programme is designed to enable a study abroad period during one of the last two semesters.

    • Societal relevance

      Society needs candidates with business related education who at the same time have good skills in computer science.

      The amount of information is continuously increasing. Being able to analyse and interpret all this information is crucial for businesses’ competitiveness. The program provides a broad introduction to business and management at the same time as one acquires a basic competence in data science. With this competence, the candidates will attractive both in the private and public, as the combination of business administration and IT opens up many exciting jobs and further studies.
      The candidates will gain a better understanding of the challenges private business and public administration face when dealing with large amounts of data, and their need for tools that form the basis for effective decision making. This is a required competence, and candidates with this background are well placed to be bridge builders between finance and IT specialists.

    • Learning activities

      During the program, students typically meet in a number of different learning activities: Preparation for and participation in lecture classes, participation in seminars / group work with a teacher present, problem solving, self-study, assignments, presentations and excursions.
    • Examination

      A number of evaluation methods have been implemented. Some courses have a traditional final exam, while others have a continuous evaluation in the form of projects, presentations, or various types of written work.

    • Equipment

      Computers are used both in the teaching and at exams. All students must therefore have their own laptop (NMBU regulation § 17-4).
    • Information for students from partner universities

      Some of the bachelor's courses are taught in English, and these can also be taken by visiting exchange students.

    • Cooperation with other institutions

      Norwegian University of Life Sciences cooperates with other Universities and University Colleges offering degrees within the field of Business Administration.
