Language requirements for programmes taught in English

Study programmes taught in English have a higher requirement for proficiency in English than the Nokut GSU list.

Language requirements

 

Bachelor programmes

NMBU offers one bachelor programme with English as the medium of instruction: Bachelor in international environment and development studies.

Applicants who are not native speakers of English must document their proficiency in English with one of the following tests:

  • Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) with a minimum total score of 550 for a paper based test (PBT), or minimum total score 80 on an internet-based test (IBT).
  • International English Language Testing Service (IELTS), academic, with a minimum overall band score of 6.0.
  • Cambridge ESOL Examinations Advanced with C or better
  • Cambridge ESOL Examinations Proficiency with C or better
  • Applicants with Norwegian upper secondary school: Foundation/level 1 course in English at upper secondary school (140 hours) with the mark 4 or better (alternatively, a pass in the English Advanced course I and/or II).  

Please note that a TOEFL or IELTS test cannot be more than two years old.

Master programmes

NMBU offers several master programmes with English as the medium of instruction.

Applicants who are not native speakers of English must document their proficiency in English with one of the following tests:

  • Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) with a minimum total score of 580 for a paper based test, or minimum total score 92 on an internet-based test.
  • International English Language Testing Service (IELTS), academic, with a minimum total band score of 7.0.
  • Cambridge ESOL Examinations Advanced with C or better
  • Cambridge ESOL Examinations Proficiency with C or better
  • Applicants with Norwegian upper secondary school: Foundation/level 1 course in English at upper secondary school (140 hours) with the mark 4 or better (alternatively, a pass in the English Advanced course I and/or II).  

Please note that a TOEFL or IELTS test cannot be more than two years old.

Exemptions

Applicants with one of the following qualifications are exempted from delivering an English test:

  • Applicants who have completed minimum one year of studies on university level in Great Britain, Ireland, USA, Canada, New Zealand or Australia.
  • Applicants who have completed a bachelor degree or completed minimum one year of master studies (60 ECTS) with English as the medium of instruction in one of the Nordic countries.
  • Applicants who have a university degree in English language and/or literature (a degree in other disciplines taught in English does not meet the requirement, unless it is from the Nordic countries or Great Britain, Ireland, USA, Canada, New Zealand or Australia).
  • Applicants with an IB Diploma.
  • Applicants whose country is listed with no English requirement in the NOKUT GSU list  are exempted from delivering a test. If your country is listed with "Yes", you must take a test.

Please note that having worked in an English speaking environment or lived in an English speaking country does not meet the requirement.

Language requirements for programmes taught in Norwegian  

NMBU offers bachelor programs, master programs and non degree studies with Norwegian as medium of instruction. For these programs/ courses, proficiency in Norwegian and English is required.
