How to apply for exchange
Check your exchange options
Exchange opportunities sorted by Faculties
It is very important that you check that the exchange agreement applies to your study program or field of study.
It is your responsibility to check via the host university's website whether they offer relevant courses within the agreement.
If you want to see what kind of experiences previous students have with exchange, look up the university you are curious about in NMBU's Exchange Blog.
MANDATORY read prior to submitting exchange application
- You must have valid study rights for a bachelor's or master's program at NMBU both at the time of application and at the time of departure.
- You must have a minimum of 60 credits at the time of application. This requirement applies to students at bachelor's level.
- You must have passed the exams listed in the your education plan before departure.

- You are responsible for ensuring the host institution offers courses relevant to your study program or field of study.
- Study plan (subjects) abroad must become part of your degree at NMBU.
- Most exchange agreements have language requirements. Check that you meet these.

NOTE:
Applications without a motivation letter will not be processed
Applicants who have not been nominated or on exchange previously will be prioritised.
Application deadlines
Deadlines to apply for exchange:
- 1 February for the autumn semester, spring semester or the entire academic year (main application deadline).
- 15 September for the spring semester (supplementary application deadline)
Apply for Exchange in 'Søknadsweb'
Apply in Søknadsweb by the deadline. Open the application and enter your top 3 preferred exchange host institution choices in priority order. Complete all required fields and click OK and Save (the application will then be sent). Note that you can make changes to your priorities right up until the deadline.
Note:
- Remember to upload a motivation letter (max one A4 page, write only about the university you set as your 1st priority)
- If you are inactive for 10 minutes, you must log in again - have most of your information ready before you open Søknadsweb.
- What should the comments field be used for? Here you write briefly about your language skills (does not apply to English-language studies) and whether you would like to travel with someone.
Submitting your application in Søknadsweb is only the first step in the application process. If you are recommended by NMBU to apply to travel on exchange, the next step in the process is to apply for admission to the relevant educational institution abroad. You will receive information and assistance from NMBU to do this. If you have any questions regarding Søknadsweb, you can send an email to utveksling@nmbu.no.
If you have any questions about 'Søknadsweb', contact utveksling@nmbu.no
Assessment of Application
Submitting the application in 'Søknadsweb' is only the first step in the application process.
The Department of Academic affairs processes applications. You will be assessed based on formal requirements, relevant qualifications, and your motivation letter. If there is competition for places, grades will be the deciding factor.
NMBU nominations do not guarantee acceptance to the host institution. Any specific requirements set by the host institution will be evaluated by them after you have been directly nominated and completed the host institutions application process.
Exchange Suitability
NMBU aims to ensure that all students going on exchange have the necessary prerequisites to benefit fully from their exchange and avoid delays in their studies. In special cases, NMBU may advise against participating in an exchange if it is deemed not in the student's best academic interest.
