Erasmus+ is the world's largest education program and is funded by the EU. Here you will find an overview of who can apply, where you can go, how to apply, and opportunities for Erasmus scholarships.

  • Find an Erasmus agreement

To go on an Erasmus exchange, you must apply for a spot through one of NMBU's Erasmus agreements. These agreements make it possible to go on exchange to several EU countries, as well as EEA countries like Iceland and Turkey. You can find an overview of the agreements here

  • Who can apply for Erasmus+ Exchange

    • You have to be a degree-seeking student in one of NMBU's study programmes when you apply for the exchange.
    • The exchange must be approved as part of your degree at NMBU.
    • You must apply to a university that has an Erasmus+ agreement with NMBU (for study mobility)
    • You must have at least 60 ECTS
    • Some Erasmus+ agreements have additional requirements, for example language requirements and the amount of passed ECTS. Always check the web profile for further information.
    • Minimum length of stay for study mobility for Erasmus+ is 2 months (60 days).
    • You can apply for exchange through Erasmus+ for maximum of 12 months per study level (BA/MA/PhD).

    Erasmus+ grant

What applies for the academic year 2025/2026 will be finalized in June, and we therefore reserve the right to make changes. The scholarship amount may vary depending on the allocated funding and the number of applicants.

When you go on exchange through an Erasmus agreement, you may receive an Erasmus scholarship. The scholarship is calculated based on the number of months/days you spend on exchange, as confirmed by the host university at the end of your exchange period.
You can only receive the scholarship for the actual mobility period (virtual studies will not be covered):

Start date: The first day you are required to be present at the host institution for academic reasons, such as the first day of classes, welcome events, etc.
End date: The last day you are required to be present at the host institution for academic reasons, such as the last day of the examination period.

You can get the grant for the actual mobility period (virtual studies will not be covered):

    • Start date: the first day you must be present at the host institution for academic reasons, such as the first day of teaching, the welcome events, etc.
    • End date: the last day you must be present at the host institution for academic reasons, such as the last day of the examination period.

It is important to note that Erasmus+ activities are never fully funded. The scholarship covers part of the costs of a stay abroad but does not finance the entire stay.

  • Travel support and Green mobility

Students traveling to Nordic countries receive a travel grant through Erasmus+ since they do not qualify for travel support from Lånekassen. Students who travel using green modes of transport for at least half of their journey can apply for the Erasmus Green Travel Grant.

The Erasmus program aims to reduce its carbon footprint, encouraging students to opt for sustainable travel options during their exchange. Students choosing green travel modes, such as trains or buses, to and/or from their host university are eligible for the Green Travel Grant. Note that travel by car or boat is generally not considered green unless the vehicle is electric.

Eligibility for the Green Travel Grant:

    • At least half of the total journey to and from the host university (measured in kilometers) must be completed using green transport to qualify for the grant.
    • The distance from NMBU (Oslo) to the host university is calculated using the European Commission’s Distance CalculatorDistance Calculator - Erasmus+ (europa.eu).

    Steps for Applying:

    1. After Returning from Exchange: Students must apply for the Green Travel Grant after completing their exchange period.
    2. Application Deadline: Submit your application by the same deadline for delivering the Confirmation of Erasmus Period:
      • January 30: For fall semester exchanges.
      • August 30: For spring semester exchanges.
    3. Document Your Travel: The green journey must be documented using receipts for train or bus tickets.

    Additional Benefits:

Students traveling green are entitled to additional Erasmus funding for travel days:

    • 2 extra travel days: For travel within the Nordic countries.
    • 4 extra travel days: For Central Europe (up to 1999 km according to the Distance Calculator).
    • 6 extra travel days: For Southern Europe (up to 2999 km according to the Distance Calculator).

Students who travel sustainably must apply for a Green Erasmus travel grant after returning from exchange, within the deadline for submitting the Confirmation of Erasmus Period (30 January for exchanges in the autumn, and 30 August for exchanges in the spring). The green journey must be documented with train/bus receipts, and extra Erasmus grants are also given for travel days: 2 extra travel days in the Nordic region, 4 extra travel days in central Europe (up to 1999 km in the distance calculator) and 6 extra travel days for the South -Europe (up to 2999 km in the distance calculator).

    Application for Green Mobility Grant

Travel grants for the academic year 2025/2026 will be verified in June. Note changes in rates and which scholarships are offered m

    • Students from underrepresented groups/ with fewer opportunities

Students from underrepresented groups in student mobility ("students with fewer opportunities") are entitled to additional grants. The additional grant is a grant to ensure inclusion and diversity in Erasmus+. The aim is that students from underrepresented groups within study mobility should make greater use of the opportunities Erasmus+ opens up. Both students who fall within the definitions of students with fewer opportunities and students with disabilities can receive additional grants. Each student can only receive one additional scholarship, even in the case where they fall under repeated categories that we have listed

From 2025, the following categories will apply for additional grants:

Students with children or other care responsibilities

      • All students with children under the age of 18, regardless of whether the child participates in the mobility or not, can receive an additional grant. You can still only get one additional grant, so you don't get anything more if you have more children. Students with care responsibilities for younger siblings, older family members and/or family members with serious mental and/or physical illness, as well as drug addiction, can also receive additional grants. Documentation requirements: Students must sign a declaration ("declaration on honour") to confirm that they belong the category "students with fewer opportunities".

Students with permanent disabilities and chronic diseases

All students who fall under the UN's definition of persons with disabilities are considered "students with fewer opportunities." This definition is broad and refers to disabilities and/or chronic illnesses that are long-term in nature.

"Persons with disabilities include those who have long-term physical, mental, intellectual, or sensory impairments which, in interaction with various barriers, may hinder their full and effective participation in society on an equal basis with others" (sourced from the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities – fn.no).

      Documentation Requirements:
Students must sign a declaration ("declaration on honour") to confirm that they belong to the category of "students with fewer opportunities." Note that random checks may be conducted.

The category for disabilities and chronic illnesses refers to conditions that significantly hinder students from participating on an equal basis with others. These are not temporary or minor issues but serious barriers that can be physical, cognitive, or psychological. Students with these conditions require tailored support to succeed in their education.

      Students with refugee status

      • All students with refugee status are considered to have fewer opportunities. Documentation requirements: Students must sign a declaration ("declaration on honour") to confirm that they belong to the category "students with fewer opportunities".

Students belonging to the indigenous population and national minorities

      • All students who are connected to the indigenous population (Sámi) or the national minorities (Jews, Kvens/Norwegian Finns, Romani people/Tatars, Skog Finns and Roma). The affiliation can be linked to language and cultural anchoring in that the student either a) uses the relevant language as home language and/or b) has or had a parent, grandparent or great-grandparent with the relevant language as their home language Or (only apply to Sami students) c) is in, or is the child of a person who is or has been in, the Sami population.
      • Documentation requirements: Students must sign a declaration ("declaration on honour") to confirm that they belong to the category "students from underrepresented groups/students with fewer opportunities".
      • The additional grant is €250 extra per month.

Students with disabilities and need for facilitation:

      • NMBU can apply for extra inclusion support from the EU, which will cover documented extra expenses related to exchange. The need must be documented through a doctor's certificate or similar, and the support must cover actual expenses (which are not covered by aids/support that the person can bring with them from Norway). There is no upper limit to this support. This is how the EU has defined a person with a need for extra support (special needs): «a person with special needs; a potential participant whose individual physical, mental or health-related situation is such that his/her participation in the mobility action would not be possible without extra financial support".

      Examples of facilitation options:

      Adapted housing

      Availability access

      Adapted study literature (audiobooks)

      Possibility of assistance

    • Blended Intensive programs (BIP)

Blended Intensive Program (BIP) is an exchange program consisting of both a digital and a physical component. You must earn at least 3 ECTS credits for participation, and the physical component must last between 5 and 30 days. You can apply for a grant for the physical component in approved BIP programs.

What can you get support for?

      • You can only receive a grant for approved Blended Intensive Programs (BIP). The program must be approved and recommended by the faculty, and NMBU must have a signed agreement on blended mobilities in place for you to be able to apply for grant to participate.
      • Students participating in BIPs can receive 79 EUR per day. Note that rates may change from year to year.
      • NMBU has a maximum limit of 10 days for the grant covering physical mobility to allow as many participants as possible. One travel day can also be covered.
      • If you have been admitted to and received approval for a Blended Intensive Program from the faculty, you must contact utveksling@nmbu.no at least six weeks before the start of the program.
      • Limited funding means that, unfortunately, a scholarship is not guaranteed even if the requirements are met.
      • Students with fewer opportunities can receive an additional grant (top-up) of EUR 100

    • Erasmus+ documents/ Learning agreement OLA

NMBU has been awarded the Erasmus Charter for Higher Education (ECHE) by the European Commission for the period 2021-2027.

Higher education institutions that wish to participate in the EU's Erasmus+ education program must have a valid Erasmus Charter for Higher Education in order to participate in the activities in the program.

In the charter, NMBU is given obligations when the university participated in Erasmus+ activities.

Through a joint set of duties, the charter will also help to ensure the quality of the collaborative activities the university participates in with foreign partner universities through Erasmus+.
