CRED Head Siri Eriksen recently participated in an IPBES expert meeting in Bern, Switzerland, contributing to international discussions on biodiversity, climate change and sustainable development.
During her visit, Eriksen also took part in “Biodiversity x Climate: Swiss Community meets IPBES & the IPCC”, organised by ProClim and the Swiss Biodiversity Forum at the Swiss Academy of Sciences (SCNAT), together with the Swiss Federal Office for the Environment (FOEN).
The meeting brought together researchers and experts from the biodiversity and climate communities to strengthen dialogue and explore opportunities for closer collaboration. Eriksen contributed her experience as an author of both IPBES and IPCC assessments, helping to identify key interlinkages between climate change and biodiversity loss that need to be addressed across the ongoing IPCC Seventh Assessment Report and the IPBES Second Global Assessment.
With the two assessments being developed in parallel, there are currently few formal mechanisms for communication between the processes beyond informal exchanges among authors. The discussions in Bern therefore provided an important opportunity to consider how climate and biodiversity measures can be assessed together and how actions in one area may affect the other.
Eriksen will bring these discussions back to her work on the IPBES Second Global Assessment, including approaches for identifying and addressing interlinkages between biodiversity and climate change responses.
