Study program: Applied Economics in Sustainability

Why did you choose to study in Norway?

I wanted to gain experience and perspective outside of the US and I felt that it would be interesting to see how European education systems compare to my prior education.

My mom is from Norway, and I thus have a dual citizenship which made the decision relatively easy. Norway is also an ideal place to study climate change as it well known for its progressive policies on sustainability.

I knew I wanted to study a master's in Sustainable Economics, so I looked up various programs and landed on applying to NMBU after researching the program.

How did you experience settling in on campus?

I came to campus for international week where I got to meet a lot of new people and it made settling into campus life fairly easy. I also managed to get a student apartment early which took out a lot of stress as I did not have to rush to find a place to stay.

Tell us about your study program

My program seeks to address a growing need for accounting environmental externalities into decision making processes. This is an increasingly important field as climate change will continue to threaten so many aspects of our current society, and we need two mitigate the damages.

As a relatively new student, I like that we have group work sessions in many of our classes that enable us to collaborate with other students. I really am enjoying my course on climate economics, it feels very updated and relevant.

Tell us about life at Campus Ås

The campus is beautiful and easy to navigate! I like how close everything is and Oslo is only a short train ride away. It can be a bit rainy but if you have the proper gear it is not bad at all.

There is a whole lot going on all the time. Every week there are plenty of events for students to attend if you wish. There are also many clubs and student groups you can join based on your interests. I have joined the Ultimate Frisbee team, Climbing club, Outdoor club, and Helix (Formula Student team). Life is very busy but enjoyable, it can be challenging to balance everything.

What do you plan to do after your studies?

We will see where life takes me, but I hope to stay and work in Norway after I graduate. I would like to do something involving sustainable economics and energy analysis.
