By 2050, the global population is predicted to reach 10 billion. The UN estimates that this will require 56% more food than is currently produced worldwide, all whilst contending with the growing impacts of climate change and other crises. Welcome to an open talk by Cary Fowler, who will discuss the threats and opportunities for food security in the decades ahead.
Cary is currently serving as the U.S. Special Envoy for Global Food Security. He was recently awarded the prestigious World Food Prize, and is perhaps best known as the ‘father’ of the Svalbard Global Seed Vault, an initiative he started whilst he was a professor at NMBU’s Department of International Environment and Development Studies (Noragric). He is also former Executive Director of the Global Crop Diversity Trust.
Also in attendance will be Bjørg Sandkjær, Deputy Minister of International Development.
Cary is in Norway to receive an Honorary Doctorate, awarded by the Norwegian University of Life Sciences for his outstanding contributions to food security across the globe. This talk is a great opportunity to hear the engaging Dr. Fowler share his insights and to participate in a thought-provoking discussion.
