MILJØ370 Internship in Environmental Sciences

Course frequency:Annually, the course is given in all teaching periods.

Nominal workload:

• 175 hours at the business

• Approximately 25 hours for administrative tasks

• Approximately 50 hours for submissions of assessment material

Teaching and exam period:The course runs in August block, autumn parallel, January block, spring parallel and June block. The start and end of the course can extend over several teaching periods.

About this course

The course provides an opportunity to gain work experience in a relevant business with issues in environmental sciences and radioactivity, where students and businesses will benefit mutually from the experience. The student will take part in, and link accumulated theoretical and practical knowledge to the company's activity.

Learning outcome

A candidate with a completed qualification should have the following learning outcomes in the course:

Knowledge:

  • Knowledge of relevant work tasks in businesses and how to work with these.
  • Knowledge of how a company organizes its everyday work.
  • Knowledge of how one's own professional competence can be used in working life.

Skill:

  • Can plan, prioritize and structure everyday work to carry out planned projects and tasks.
  • Can reflect on their own professional practice and adjust this under supervision.
  • Can communicate and reflect on their own experiences

General competence:

  • Can collaborate on professional issues, and implementation of projects, in a working life situation.
  • Can reflect on and critically evaluate how knowledge acquired through the study can be used in practical work tasks.
  • Can apply their knowledge and skills in new areas to carry out advanced tasks and projects.
  • Learning activities
    • Practical work in a business
    • Get familiarized with relevant literature for the practical work
    • Presentation of internship period using a video, podcast or blog post

  • Teaching support

    Learning support is provided through:

    • guidance from the contact person in the business
    • guidance from a professional supervisor at MINA
    • employee interview during the internship
  • Prerequisites
    Relevant background in environmental sciences or nuclear sciences.
  • Assessment method

    Portfolio assessment consisting of:

    • Reflection note and a closing conversation based on the reflection note with the course responsible.
    • The student will either submit a video, podcast, or a blog post summarizing their experiences and learning outcomes from the internship period. It should be possible to publish the product on MINA's website.

  • Examiner scheme
    An external examiner approves the assessment scheme.
  • Mandatory activity

    To be evaluated in the course, the following activities must be completed and approved:

    • Completed start-up and midway discussions (employee talks) between the employer and the student. A brief note reflecting on these discussions should be submitted.
    • Completed work, which is documented through submitted monthly timesheets and a record of work carried out according to the internship plan and in line with the learning outcomes outlined in the course description and contract.
  • Notes

    The course is credit-giving. No salary shall be received for the internship period.

    In some cases, security clearances that can take up to 9 months to obtain are required. Therefore, students should contact potential employers who may require security clearance (e.g., IFE) early on.

    To take the course, the student must:

    1. Find a business and internal academic supervisor.

    2. Write a contract with the company and the internal academic supervisor.

    3. Send a completed contract to studieveileder-mina@nmbu.no.

    4. The study advisor sends confirmation of an approved contract to students, the company and the internal academic supervisor.

  • Preferential right
    The course is reserved for master students at B-MILJØ, B-RAMI, M-MILJØ and M-RAMI.
  • Admission requirements

    Students admitted to the master's programme in Environmental Sciences og Nuclear and Environmental Sciences.

    Students admitted to the bachelor's programme in Environmental sciences or Environmental radioactivity, with at least 120 approved and relevant ECTS.
