About this course

The course provides students with fundamental insight into and understanding of what innovation is and the significance of innovation for value creation in business and society. Key topics include an introduction to innovation, establishing, working in, and developing an innovation team, creativity and innovation. Furthermore, students gain theoretical and practical knowledge of Design Thinking. The course also covers innovation management and decision-making under uncertainty. Innovation is also viewed from a sustainability perspective.

Learning outcome

A student, upon completing the course, will have the following overall learning outcomes defined in knowledge, skills, and general competence:

Knowledge

The student:

  • has good knowledge of key innovation theories and types of innovation
  • has knowledge of the relationship between innovation and technological development
  • has knowledge of innovation processes, creativity in innovation, decision-making, and learning in creation processes

Skills

The student:

  • can apply knowledge to develop ideas, as well as screen and test them in an early innovation phase
  • can evaluate and analyze innovation in light of a sustainability perspective

General Competence

The student:

  • can communicate about innovation with others in an understandable way
  • has a critical and constructive problem understanding and can contribute to problem-solving in a team
  • Learning activities

    The course will be taught in the form of lectures, exercises and work on compulsory activities. Students are expected to come well prepared for class and read the syllabus and literature as the course progresses. The course lecturers will encourage group work, active participation, questions and discussions. The course is based on active participation from the students.

  • Assessment method

    The course is concluded with an oral team based examination based on the work the students have done and what they learned during the course (Lesson learned and a two minutes video). Final grading are based upon an evaluation of the presentation and a discussion with examinators. A retake exam is not organized in this course.

    Two examiners.
  • Mandatory activity

    Compulsory attendance at all lectures, and participation in group work and two written assignments from each team.

    The mandatory activities must be completed again when retaking the course.
