Om dette emnet

Sensors are fundamental in all kinds of application areas, including industrial robotics, healthcare, automotive, and consumer-level electronics. The purpose of this course is to provide a practical introduction to sensor and measurements systems commonly used today. Theoretical discussion will be strongly supported by practical work, with hands-on testing of a variety of sensors to help better understand their capabilities and limitations. Examples from the state-of-the-art research in sensors and measurement systems (relevant particularly to us in robotics) will be provided, including by guest lectures from academia and industry.

Upon completion of this module, a student should be:

  • Familiar with various types of sensors (e.g., temperature, pressure, inertia, radar, moisture).
  • Able to demonstrate fundamental knowledge regarding sensing principles, interfacing, and limitations.
  • Aware of the challenges that noise presents to sensor systems, and be able to apply widely used signal processing techniques to mitigate its impact on system performance.
  • Able to characterise sensor performance in terms of common benchmarks (e.g., accuracy, precision, resolution).
  • Able to perform common methods for sensor calibration.
  • Læringsaktiviteter
Lectures will be provided to aid theoretical understanding. Practical tutorials will be held to help build skills with sensors in application development.
  • Læringsstøtte
Support will be available during allocated lecture and tutorial sessions. Lecture notes, course updates, and tutorial material will be posted on Canvas. Support is also available during the course period by e-mail, or by a pre-agreed appointment.
  • Pensum
    Provided at first lecture.
  • Forutsatte forkunnskaper

  • Vurderingsordning, hjelpemiddel og eksamen

Students will undertake a written examination and a practical assignment.

    1. Individual practical assignment (70%, oral examination/demonstration)

    2. Individual online assessment (30%, online test via Canvas)

Each aspect of the portfolio should be documented appropriately. More information will be provided during the introduction to the course.
