Limits of class size:
This course will only be given if students with "grøntmiljø"or a minimum of five students register. Maximum 20 students can participate.
Teaching exam periods:
This course starts in Autumn parallel. This course has teaching/evaluation in Autumn parallel.

Preferential right:
Engelsk: Master´s degree students in Plant Science or Landscape Architecture and Bachelor´s degree students in Plant Science and Landscape Ingeneering.
Course contents:
Vegetation analysis and management of vegetation in different types of green areas. A term paper based on field registrations is made by the student. Revegetation and restoration of degraded land. Alien species. Vegetation in the cultural landscape. Establishment and maintenance of grass areas for sport arenas. Vegetation and pollution. Soil, erosion and water relationship. Climatic adaption and selection of landscape plants. Tree physiology, tree care and wood anatomy. Diagnosis and assessment. Quality control in green areas.
Learning outcome:


Students will have  broad insight into critical factors in achieving good green areas, for recreational, environmental or aesthetic purposes. Students will understand how environmental conditions and maintenance affects the development and quality of the vegetation.

Skills and general competence

In restoration of degraded areas students will be able to  have an ecological approach an know the problems related to alien and invasive plant species.

The students will have  detailed knowledge of establisment,maintenance procedures and function of specific vegetation elements an kind of areas. The students are able to use this knowledge in diagnosing, evaluation and planning of maintenance programmes for green areas. Students  will be aware of the roles of different kinds of professionals in landscape management and acquire a greater respect for their own and other scientific areas through an interdisciplinary approach. Students will be able to realize the interaction between theory and practice and  to decide when additional competance should be involved.

Learning activities:
Engelsk: Lectures, term paper, excursions and demonstrations. The lectures are characterized by interaction with the students trough discussions and dialogs. The students writes a report based on field studies and presents the work to the other students.
Engelsk:The syllabus will vary somewhat from one year to the next. Therefore there may be changes in the reading list. Presentations/demonstrations related to excursions, exercises and guest lectures. Chapters in books. Compendiums and articles. 
Engelsk: PHG113 and JORD160 or similar, PHG213, PHG215 (can be taken in parallel)
Recommended prerequisites:
Mandatory activity:

Term paper and presentation. Excursions, demonstrations and exercises.

Written report and oral presentation.  Excursions, demonstration and exercises  

Oral exam counts for 2/3 and term paper for 1/3. To pass the exam both oral exam and term paper must be passed.
