The course focus on documentation of historic parks and landscapes and interpretation and analysis of the various historical layers. The participants will get an overview of the different concepts (conservation, restoration, reconstruction, authenticity and others), methods and legislation. In addition, the course gives insight how to manage and develop a historic green space. The course uses a different case each year as specified.
To understand the historical background and layers a 3D digital model will be developed. Through interaction with the 3D model, the different historical phases and development of the site can be visualized. The 3D digital model will be used to enhance the level of understanding for the configuration of the site and can form a basis for sound decisions concerning the conservation and management. The virtual Reality Lab (VR-Lab) will be used as arena to test various scenarios and hypothesis connected to the historical development of the site.
The historic and preserved park at Campus Ås will be used as case. Campus Ås was built in different eras, reflecting educational history and social changes: Founding of Den høiere Landbrugsskole in 1859. The transformation of scientific institution in 1897 (NLH) with the building of Urbygningen for theoretical teaching and villas for teachers. Growth in the period 1918-1940 with the building of the tower building, and establishment of a neoclassical park. Postwar extensive development at the fringes of the older core area. Students will choose a task related to different problems in: conservation/restoration and management of historic gardens and parks, management of cultural landscapes and digital presentation of values.
Students who have completed the course are expected to have achieved the following learning outcomes.
Knowledge: This course gives students knowledge of central topics in relation to investigation, conservation, restoration and management of historic gardens and parks, including the challenges in today¿s cultural heritage management for both private and public sector.
Skills: When the course is finished, students should be able to recognize and investigate an historical park or garden element, and present an analysis of this according to historical sources and layers. Digital presentation techniques e.g. 3D modelling and 3D visualization are used as a supportive tool for analysis and for presenting the final results.
Generell comptetence: Students will be able to critically reflect on their choices and interpretations of parks and landscapes with historical value. They should be able to explain the importance of the site and uses new technology (3D) to understand and convey the historical development.
The course is based on a combination of lectures, excursions and group work, and consists of a theoretical part and a studio part.
