The thesis will be an independent in-depth study of relevance within the landscape engineering studies.
The process towards filed task consists of: The choice of topic, defining issues, planning methodology and implementation, create schedule and appointment guidance, obtain / familiarize themselves with relevant theory and empirical evidence, or conduct field surveys / field inspections / own studies, process, present and discuss their own data against theoretical / empirical and complete and submit the task.
Approach and task execution may depend on the topic and methodology choices. It can be based on science (soil, plant sciences, biology, ecology), engineering sciences (construction, materials science, engineering, stormwater problems) or social studies / management (operational, strategic or political level).
The task can also be angled locally, regionally, nationally or internationally. The task may be solely based on the literature, but will normally include an examination where the student collects, processes and generates data. In most cases, assignments of this type have such structure: - Introduction with presentation of the problem (s) - The approach and method - Presentation of theory and empirical evidence - Describe the methodology and results of own field surveys and / or literature studies - Discuss the findings in light of theory / empirical studies - Summary and possibly conclusion - Bibliography, references - Finally summary and foreword.
The purpose of the Bachelor's thesis is that the student are giving training in independent work by performing a task / prepare a report in which the student has defined, planned, implemented and finalized work within allocated timeframe. The student must demonstrate the ability to acquire skills that are expected to respond to a defined problem. The student will develop independent skills in writing academic presentation in a chosen topic.
The candidate that has fulfilled bachelor's thesis, will have achieved the following learning outcomes defined as Knowledge, Skills and General competence.
The student must have knowledge:
About key issues and current topics in research and development within the chosen theme - In displaying knowledge in identifying problem (s) and formulate research question (s) - About theories, issues and processes in the field - About understanding of roles in technical discussions, processes and projects - About the theme's social impact, including interaction with other disciplines.
The student must have skills about:
Applying scientific knowledge, methods and tools - Seeking, assessing and having references to expertise / knowledge sources and how to apply that knowledge in practical and theoretical issues in the field and to make professional reasons for their conclusions - Collecting, processing and presenting literature-based information or Data - Using relevant terminology and scientific tools, techniques and illustrative expressions - Conducting systematic and purposeful investigative work - Preparing and presenting a written report with appropriate structure - Making an oral presentation of a work.
The student must have achieved general competence in:
Managing their own learning with independence - managing to update their knowledge in the field - Having a critical look at their own work and having the ability to reflect on the arguments and other consideration perspectives.
Self-programming work. This includes:Independence and personal effort (based on framework conditions and guidance process)Structure, presentation ways and layoutIssue and method descriptionData collection and/or literature surveyData processing and presentationDiscussion of collected data or other information, ability to find and learn from literature/ research from others, understanding roles and contextsLinguistic precision, both terminology of subject and in general.Oral presentation and answers to questions from sensors (structure, precision, understanding literature and own surveys)
Individual guidance. It is being targeted launch or middle seminar with students and teacher guidance if theme choices are relevant for several students. Students van join courses in literature search and references at NMBU library.
In addition to literature provided by the supervisor, the students shall suggest and provide relevant literature and other relevant materials for the task.
The student should have passed all compulsory courses included in landscape engineering program - even 2.5 years of study.
A contract form with the supervisor must be signed by both student and supervisor and delivered to the faculty administration within the set deadline.
The thesis must be presented orally on Graduate day in June. Exceptionally, exemption may be granted, for instance by sick leave. The candidate must deliver a written application.
Written assignment with the following oral presentation, assessed by an external examiner in collaboration with internal examiner. Rating: A-E = Pass / Fail = F.
450 hours: From this students should decide the following: 2-6 hours joint seminar, 3 hours library courses, 2-4 hours individual instruction, 1 hour orally presentation of thesis.
Type of course:
Seminar and individual instruction.
Establish contact with the supervisor immediately after award and sign the contract. Documented courses in literature and source reference from NMBU library.
The course is under construction, therefore there can be changes.
External examiners in collaboration with internal examiners assess the thesis individually.
