I am a professor of Forest Policy and Economics at MNBU. I hold a D. Sc. (Econ.) in management science from Aalto University, Finland.

I teach forest economics in course SKOG230 and forest sector modelling in course SKOG300 at NMBU. I supervise M.Sc. and Ph.D. thesis in the fields of forest economics, markets, and policy. Forest sector modelling and other applications of operations research may be used in the thesis work.

Thorough my career, I have carried out policy relevant economic research and consulting in the broad field of forest sector topics related, e.g., to competition analyses in the wood market and forest industry, role of uncertainties in the decision making and sectoral analysis, trade and trade policies (trade constraints, FLEGT), economics of biodiversity conservation, developments in wood-based energy and impacts of policies on that, role of forest-based sector in climate change mitigation and impacts of climate policies (e.g., LULUCF forest reference levels, subsidies and targets for bioenergy), and bioeconomy. I have developed or modelled several tools for such analyses, including national and global (the EFI-GTM, the FORMEQ) forest sector models.

At NMBU, I continue my research on the impacts of climate and other policies in the EU and Norway on the forest-based sector and research on  developments in forest-based bioeconomy. At Climate Smart Forestry Norway (CSFN) project, I lead the work addressing the role of carbon substitution and storage effects of wood-based products in the climate change mitigation in the Norwegian forest sector. At project PRECISION, I lead work packages that consider root and butt rot and the risks related to it to the economics in the Norwegian forestry. At project Forest Potential, we study the climate change effects in the forest sector.

I am coordinating the Forest Sector Analysis unit at International Union of Forest Research Organizations (IUFRO). I am in editorial board/editorial advisory board in Journal of Forest Economics, Forest Policy and Economics and Silva Fennica.

    Prosjekter

    Climate Smart Forestry Norway
We will improve forest resilience to climate change, and contribute to reduced GHG emissions by substituting fossil based products with forest products, and at the same time, provide increased and sustainable economic returns to forest owners.

    Klimasmart skogbruk Norge

Precision forestry for improved resource utilization and reduced wood decay in Norwegian forests (PRECISION)
Every year, the fungi causing root and butt rot inflicts heavy economic losses for the forest industry. In this project we will use digital data from harvesters, satellites, aircrafts and drones to develop methods that limit the spread of infection.
