Systems biology for salmon farming is what I do. I lead the DigiSal project, whose full title is "Towards the Digital Salmon: From a reactive to a pre-emptive research strategy in aquaculture". DigiSal is part of Digital Life, the first call dedicated to systems biology by the Research Council of Norway. I'm also a lead modeller in GenoSysFat, working to improve the omega-3 content of salmon farmed on sustainable feeds by understanding the interplay between nutrition and genetics ("feeding and breeding"). My broad background in quantitative biology ranges from ecology to climate effects to cardiac modelling. For five years I worked on causally cohesive genotype-phenotype modelling and the analysis and comparison of virtual physiology models. I have also worked within the Infrastructure for Systems Biology Europe (ISBE), laying the foundations for "modelling as a service" to academia and industry.

Master thesis topics available, email me if you're interested and tell me a bit about your background and interests.

GenoSysFat - Integrating genomics and systems biology to improve the capacity for synthesis, transport, and filet deposition of EPA/DHA in salmon
How can we increase the omega-3 content of salmon that are fed sustainable feeds? A brand new map of the salmon's genome makes it much easier to characterize heritable differences in how well different salmon families utilize the various nutrients.

DigiSal. Towards the Digital Salmon: From a reactive to a pre-emptive research strategy in aquaculture
Systems biology will aid sustainability in salmon farming. Scarcity of fish oil has forced development of novel feedstuffs, challenging the salmon's metabolism as well as our understanding of it.
