I am professor in animal nutrition at the Norwegian University of Life Sciences, School of Veterinary Medicine, Department of Basic Sciences and Aquatic Medicine, a position I have held since 1993. Relationships between nutrition and feeding, and responses in gut function and health characteristics, host immune and gut microbiota responses have been in focus of my research throughout my career. My main experimental animal is, since 1987, Atlantic salmon, but also other fish species are investigated at present in various international projects. I have been leading several research project funded by the Norwegian research council (NRC), jointly by industry and NRC as well as contract research for the salmon and land animal feed industry and also been involved in EU projects. My research group was one of three research units of the Aquaculture Protein Centre (2003-2012), a centre of excellence under NRC addressing mainly feed and gut health aspects. The ongoing research in my group addresses areas such as gut health effects, including effects on microbiota, of insect meal produced from house hold waste and sea weed; effects of functional feeds on responses in immune functions and microbiota in the gut and skin of salmon produced under cold conditions in the north of Norway; effects of plant antinutrient on gut function and health in the lice cleaner fish ballan wrasse. My reference list comprises more than 160 papers in scientific journals. I have been partner in European researcher networks, COST actions, for many years. I have served as referee for several journals in the area of animal nutrition and physiology, evaluated many Ph.D. Theses in Norway as well as internationally. My administrative experience is also extensive from the institutions where I have been employed, and I am at present the elected leader (2012-2019) of the Aquatic Medicine and Nutrition Group at our school. I have served as leader of committees under the Research council of Norway and is member of the Norwegian Scientific Committee for Food Safety (1995 – ongoing), for which I was leader in the period 2003-2010.
