About the study place

James Cook University (JCU) is located along the Pacific coast of Queensland. The university has one campus in Cairns (153.000 inhabitants) and one in Townsville (190.000 inhabitants), and offers lectures of high quality in biology, engineering and tourism, among other subjects. JCU has over 16.000 students and an international student environment. A short distance from the Great Barrier Rief and a pleasant Pacific climate offer an exiting base for an exchange program.

  • Agreement

    All subject areas are covered by the agreement. Bachelor and master

  • Tuition fees

    NMBU students get a 15% discount on the Study Abroad tuition fee.

  • Who can apply

    Applicants need to have achieved a minimum average grade of C.

    All exchanges require a completion of 60 ECTS prior to a stay abroad.

  • Language of Instruction

    English

    Language requirements, one of the following:

    Upper secondary school norsk: videregående skole: Average grade of 4 and no older than 5 years, or
    TOEFL: 79 internet-based test, with a minimum of 19 within writing, or
    IELTS: 6.0, and no part under 5.5.

    Confirm language requirement: English language requirements JCU.

  • Recognition of credits

    12 credits (i.e. four courses of three credits each) is equivalent to 30 credits at NMBU.

  • Semester timing

    JCU works under a trimester format. Study Abroad and Exchange students have the option to attend JCU for up to three consecutive trimesters (depending on their level of study), or to combine a standard trimester (three subjects) with an additional subject taught in block mode. Students can also study four subjects within a trimester if that is the preferred approach.

  • Accomodation

    JCU can offer student rooms. Burralga Yumba and Rotary International House offers private kitchens.

    It is possible to live outside campus (Areas close to campus: Douglas, Aitkenvale and Annandale). Townsville is a 20 min. drive from campus.

  • Visa

    For studies of longer than three months in duration, a visa is required. Before applying for a visa, it is necessary to receive a Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE) from the host university. A visa can be applied for electronically, with the advantage that a reply can be expected from 1 to 3 weeks but can take longer. More information on visa.

    As of July 2024, visa application costs have increased greatly to AUD 1600.
