About the project

  • Background

The diagnosis code system Pyramidion is used by most veterinary clinics in Norway. Since its launch in 2019, more than 9 million diagnoses from Norwegian pets have been collected. These data are used by the Veterinary Institute to monitor infectious diseases in pets, but not yet for research.

It is difficult to obtain funding for companion animal research in Norway. With registry data from Pyramidion, we have good opportunities for cost-effective research in companion animal health and welfare. Research from Sweden and the United Kingdom has shown that the use of registry data can provide high-quality research that is useful in clinical veterinary medicine.

  • Aims

The overall goal of the project is to facilitate further research using Pyramidion data.

We have defined three objectives for the project. The first objective is to evaluate how representative the Pyramidion database is for dogs in Norway and quantify biases in veterinarian-reported diagnoses. The second objective is to evaluate the agreement between veterinary records and the Pyramidion database. The final objective is to estimate the occurrence of selected diseases in dogs in Norway, based on factors such as age, breed and sex.
