Co-funded by the European Union’s Horizon Europe Project 101136346 EUPAHW and partner institutions.
About the project
The project is led by Nathalie Vanderheijden, Ghent University, ANSES
The project addresses identified knowledge gaps that either pose threats to animal welfare, including antibiotic resistance and infectious diseases, or have the potential to enhance welfare, such as methods for assessing positive animal welfare, automatic welfare monitoring, and the development of shared databases in light of future challenges, demands, and opportunities in both terrestrial and aquatic production systems.
Beyond increasing theoretical knowledge, the partnership will produce reports and guidelines to support evidence-based decision-making. NMBU is involved in two main areas.
The first focuses on animal-based indicators of positive animal welfare, emphasizing systematic reviews to identify valid indicators, empirical studies to validate less-studied ones, and assessments of their on-farm feasibility. The second area concerns production systems and housing conditions that combine sustainable solutions with high standards of animal welfare.
