The Pitfalls of Data-Driven Forest Monitoring: Why Methodology Matters
When satellite data meets forest management, a tension emerges between the pace of technological progress and the precision of methodology.
Speaker: Svetlana Saarela
This talk will present current developments in forest resource monitoring using Earth Observation (EO) data and highlight the challenges and controversies that arise when such data are used to inform decision-making. Saarela will briefly introduce the statistical approaches that support EO-based forest monitoring and discuss the growing scientific gap caused by the rapid advancement of EO technology outpacing methodological development.
