About the Project

• Background

  Spark! promotes new and strengthened interdisciplinary collaboration across our campus at the intersection of energy, society, and environment (ESE), advancing both scientific and public understanding of how energy systems, infrastructures, critical materials, and technologies are reshaping the environment, economy, and society.

  This is especially urgent today: accelerating climate change, geopolitical instability (sharpened by the war in Ukraine), and rapid technological shifts—including energy-intensive AI data centers—are forcing states to balance decarbonization with energy security, social justice, and economic resilience.

  Norway, as a major producer of both fossil and renewable energy closely tied to EU climate and energy policy, faces mounting pressure around land use, resource extraction, nuclear power, critical mineral mining, and just transition for local communities.

  As research funding in Norway and the EU increasingly targets these socio technical and environmental challenges, there is a need for NMBU to better coordinate cooperation in applying for funds and innovating in this field.

• Aim

  Spark! establishes a radically interdisciplinary platform for research and education, that aims to showcase and strengthen NMBU's expertise in this field at a critical national and geopolitical moment.
