Hiruni Hewage arrived in Ås unsure of how to navigate a new country and campus. Today, she’s a confident leader, former ISU president, and an active contributor to student life at NMBU.
Name: Hiruni Hewage
Study program: Applied Economics in Sustainability
Why did you choose to study in Norway?
Coming to Norway for studies was a sudden and very last-minute decision. I submitted my application on the final day – 1st December. I had heard many good things about Norway from my uncle and aunt who live here, and at the time, tuition was free for international students, which made the opportunity even more appealing.
How did you experience settling in on campus?
Settling in at NMBU went well. We received plenty of helpful information that made it easy to prepare for student life at NMBU.
In the beginning, I was a bit shy and didn’t take part in many social activities — but that changed completely! Over time, I became much more confident and started getting involved in campus life.
I’ve participated in a wide range of activities and student organisations, and this autumn I helped organise Introduction week for new students. I also served two years as president of the International Students’ Union (ISU), which gave me valuable leadership experience and helped me build a strong network across campus.
Tell us about your study programme
I’m currently studying a master’s in Applied Economics and Sustainability. I also completed my bachelor’s degree in International Environment and Development Studies at NMBU.
One of the things I appreciate most is the small class sizes and the close contact with lecturers. It creates a supportive learning environment and makes it easier to ask questions and engage in discussions.
Life at Campus
Studying at Norway’s most beautiful campus has been amazing. I’ve been deeply involved in campus life – serving two years as president of the International Students’ Union (ISU), working with SiÅs to create content, participating in the Sri Lankan association, and working as a teaching assistant.
I enjoy being involved in many things and love interacting with people. Joining ISU was one of the best decisions I’ve made. It gave me valuable experience with organisations and helped me build a strong network.
What do you plan to do after your studies?
After completing my master’s, I’m considering applying for a PhD or finding a job in Norway. I might settle down and stay here. I really appreciate the convenience of life in Norway – from public transport to technology.

- Don’t be afraid to step outside your comfort zone!
