About this course

The course further develops students’ understanding of veterinary legislation, public administration, and professional ethical considerations, with an emphasis on application. It introduces additional topics relevant to understanding the food chain and sustainable food production, including meat inspection, environmental health, and the role of the official veterinarian.

Learning outcome

Knowledge

The student:

  • is familiar with the main features of legislation regulating veterinary practice, including the Food Act, the Hygiene Package, the Act relating to veterinary personnel, and the Animal Welfare Act
  • is familiar with the organisation of the Norwegian Food Safety Authority and its administration of legislation, including the use of regulatory measures and risk assessments
  • is familiar with the importance of environmental health in veterinary medicine
  • is familiar with the role of the official veterinarian and the importance of meat inspection and food chain information
  • can explain the role of the veterinarian in food safety, environmental protection, infection control, and bio-production
  • can place veterinary medicine within a One Health context
  • understands the importance of veterinary medicine in sustainable bio-production

  • Mandatory activity

    The following activities are mandatory:

    • excursion to an abattoir
    • approved group assignment with presentation and discussion

    Rules:

    • the excursion must be completed the next time the course is offered, regardless of the reason for absence
    • in cases of valid absence from group activities, an alternative assignment may be given
    • mandatory activities must be academically approved in order to pass the course
