About this course

Wood physics: Density, wood-water relations, capillary movements and diffusion, thermal, electrical and acoustical properties.

Mechanisms for biological deterioration of wood. Service life of wood in constructions.

Wood mechanics: Elasticity (stress and strain), orthotropic elasticity, plasticity, creep, crushing strength, bending strength, shock resistance, torsional properties, and shear strength. Dynamic behavior.

Relationships between silviculture, tree growth, wood morphology and wood properties. Statistical testing and modelling of wood properties and timber quality.

Learning outcome

Knowledge:

The student should have advanced knowledge about the properties of wood and how these may relate to the use of wood in different applications. The student should know how to relate this to the chemistry and anatomy of wood, and further how this depends on tree growth. The student should have knowledge about scientific theory and methods to do research in the field.

Skills:

The student should know how to accomplish scientific studies of wood properties. The student should know how to behave critically to different information and how to use the information to structure and make reasonings with in the field. The student should be able to analyze data with statistical software.

General competence:

The student should know how to convey and exchange opinions within the field, both in writing and orally. The student should be able to find and use knowledge on new areas within the field.

    Lectures, exercises, reporting, presentations, and excursion. The exercises are used to

    concretise the theoretical material. The students must present some of the exercises in class.

    The external examiner evaluates the all written exams.

    Exercises in wood physics and wood mechanics. Written journals and oral presentations groupwise.
  • Notes

    If there are few students, the course may either be postponed for a year or offered with an alternative teaching arrangement.

    The course is intended for masterstudents in Forestry and Structural engineering and Architecture.

  • Teaching hours

    Lectures: ca 30 hours. Exercises: ca 26 hours. Discussions/student lectures: 4 hours. In total: ca 60 hours.
