About this course

The course aims to prepare students for MATH100 and MATH-INF100.

Key elements include algebra, functions, trigonometry, vectors, differentiation, integration, as well as modeling and the use of learning tools.

In addition, the course will support students’ critical thinking, reflective abilities, motivation, and work effort, preparing them for further studies.

Learning outcome

Students should master the course content and be prepared for further mathematics courses, both from a scientific and a pedagogical perspective. In addition, students should be able to connect mathematics to real-world problems within their field of study.
  • Learning activities

Teaching sessions with an instructor: 2 sessions of 4 hours each per week.

Problem-solving workshops where students continue working on activities from the sessions.

  • Teaching support

Learning support is provided during the teaching sessions and in the problem-solving workshops; a more detailed overview will be available in Canvas.
  • Syllabus

    Will be published in Canvas.
  • Prerequisites

In particular: Basic algebra with numbers and variables (including fraction calculations and the three square formulas), percentage calculations, basic plane geometry (including the Pythagorean theorem), solving equations with one unknown and systems of equations with two unknowns, and familiarity with linear and quadratic functions.

Exception: If the required prior knowledge is lacking, students are expected to work with preparatory activities/courses in August to get ready for the mandatory start in September. They are also expected to attend (all) problem-solving workshops.

  • Recommended prerequisites

Recommended prior knowledge for the September start: Mathematics 1T or equivalent.

Exception: If the recommended prior knowledge is lacking, voluntary attendance at activities/exercise sessions in August is expected.
