Teaching and exam period:The course starts the first week of the June block. The course has teaching/assessment in the June block. The exam is a written submission of a group assignment in the June block.

About this course

This course introduces you to the process of selecting and placing plants to create resilient, functional and dynamic green spaces. It teaches how to choose the "right plant for the right place" and how to create, read and evaluate planting plans. The teaching will be a combination of outdoor and indoor learning activities. This course builds on the knowledge from PHG113.

Learning outcome

Knowledge: Students should be able to analyse ecological conditions for a given place and determine which plants can grow there. They should be able to "choose the right plants for the right place" and communicate the plant choices in a planting plan.

Skills: Students should be able to read and understand planting plans and know the plants used in Norwegian green spaces. By creating a planting plan, students should demonstrate an understanding of plant choices and how to combine and manage plants in a sustainable way.

General competence: Students should be able to critically evaluate, select and communicate plant choices.

  • Learning activities
    The course is a combination of outdoor and indoor teaching in designed green spaces. The lecture series provides the theoretical framework for understanding the basic principles of how to select plants and create a planting plan. Workshops encourage a more student-led approach and active participation. Students are expected to work in groups, to consolidate knowledge and skills.
  • Teaching support
    Student learning will be supported through a combination of direct contact with teachers and online resources on Canvas. Communication about planned teaching will take place via Canvas.
  • Syllabus
    The digital platform Plantevalg.no, the rest of the syllabus will be published on Canvas at the start of the semester. Notes and presentations on Canvas are the syllabus. Mandatory activities are the syllabus.

    PHG113 must be approved

    Submitted written group work (A-F)

  • Examiner scheme
    An external examiner will approve the assessment arrangements for the course. Internal examiners participate in the evaluations of the group assignments.
