# MATH100 Introductory Mathematics

Credits (ECTS):10

Course responsible:Susanne Solem

Campus / Online:Taught campus Ås

Teaching language:Norsk

Course frequency:Annually

Nominal workload:Lectures: 56 hours. Exercise sessions: 56 hours. Self-study: 138 hours.

Teaching and exam period:This course starts in the Autumn parallel. This course has teaching/evaluation in the Autumn parallel.

The course covers a selection of mathematical methods, (continuous) functions in one or two variables and vectors in two or three dimensions that describe important phenomena in science and economy.

Computation of slope and extremal points using differentiation. Optimization of functions of one or two variables.

Computation of areas and infinite summation (series) are connected to the concept of integration.

Examples of solving simple, ordinary differential equations.

### Learning outcome

Knowledge

When the course is completed, the student will have learned basic concepts, methods and techniques related to the course content.

Skills

The student will gain computational skills, that, along with the theory, enables them to use standard methods to study a selection of functions of one or two variables, series, vectors and simple differential equations.

General competence

The student will be able to connect the theory to relevant practical problems and apply it in their own study programmes.

• A typical week starts with an overview lecture on the most important aspects of the weeks topic, followed by a session where the students (in groups) and the lecturer tackles problems related to the content of the overview lecture.

In addition, the students are given exercises on the same topics, where the aims are: To practice calculation techniques and methods, increase the mathematical understanding of the topics and show how the topics relate to practical applications. Assistance is given at "regneverksed" (exercise sessions) several times per week.

Every week ends with an obligatory test.

"Stumble group" as a supplement to lectures and exercise classes for students needing extra support.

• Guidance related to the course content is given in connection with lectures and exercise sessions. Useful information will be announced in Canvas.

The faculty's (RealTek) oracle service for professional math-assistance will be available to the students during the teaching period.

• Math R1, S1+S2 or similar.
• 3.5 hour written examination in Wiseflow.

Permitted aids A2: no handed out calculator, other aids as specified.

A calculator is accessible in Wiseflow.

• An external examiner will be used to evaluate the examination papers.
• Mandatory activities and compulsory assignments will be announced in Canvas.

Compulsory assignments must be approved during the ongoing teaching period.

• Compulsory assignments must be approved during the ongoing teaching period.
• Lectures: 4 hours per week. Up to 12 hours of exercise sessions per week.
• 5 ECTS overlap with ECN102
• MATRS - General admission requirements or prior experiential learning, and R1 or (S1+S2) or similar mathematical skills
