About this course

The course is structured around lectures and seminars. The teaching is 4 hours a week during the spring semester. In addition to scheduled time, the student is expected to read literature that will be discussed in class, do exercises and evaluate a place with regard to its health-promoting qualities. The students work in groups supervising each other with the preparation of the final individual assignment.

Learning outcome

Knowledge

The student is expected to acquire knowledge about theories and concepts regarding the interaction between people and their physical surroundings. The student should gain an understanding of and be able to reflect on the interaction between humans and physical environments. The student should engage with research literature to acquire knowledge about which factors in the physical environment can inhibit and promote public health.

Skills

The student should gain an understanding of how to study the impact of physical environments on health and have knowledge of various methods for mapping the use and experience of physical environments. The student should gain practical experience with one or more methods. The student should be able to reflect on how knowledge about the relationships between physical environments and health, and mapping methodologies, can be used in health-promoting work within spatial and municipal planning. Emphasis is placed on the applicability of theory and methodology.

General Competence

The student is expected to further develop skills in literature search, critical reading, academic writing skills, teamwork, responsibility, ability to reflect and think critically through independent work and group work. The student should be able to see the value of and apply knowledge and skills from the course independently in various situations in further education and professional contexts.

  • Learning activities
    Students will through lectures, literature seminars and assignments be introduced to the various themes and methods. The students can through their own literature search obtain deeper knowledge on a particular theme and method. Theoretical knowledge and reflection will be practiced through mandatory exercises and a written assignment.

    Supervision of teacher and co-students .
  • Prerequisites
    The students must have completed 2 years at Bachelor level (120 ECTS).
  • Assessment method

    Individual assignment (1500-2000 words).

    Obligatory assignments have to be completed to be allowed to deliver written assignment.



  • Examiner scheme
    An external examiner will evaluate the system for assessing student performance. Two examiners will evaluate the submitted assignment, either two internal examiners or one internal and one external examiner.

    Submission/participation four exercises

    Minimum 80% attendance during teaching hours
