JUS100 Legal Method and Norwegian Legal System
About this course
Lectures are given in basic legal methodology, with a focus on the foundations of the doctrine of legal sources and how legal methodology is influenced by international law such as human rights and EU/EEA law. The lectures emphasize practical examples related to NMBU’s fields of study. The course includes plenary reviews of assignments. Study group work is not mandatory, but recommended. For students coming directly from videregående, the course may be experienced as demanding. Abstract concepts will be introduced, requiring time and reflection to develop proper conceptual understanding. It is important that students invest significant independent effort and begin reading the syllabus as early as possible.
Learning outcome
Students have a basic overview over the Norwegian legal system. The students should acquire a good understanding of basic legal method, hereunder interpretation theory and technique for solving cases in practice. The students should become familiar with the main features in the Norwegian constitution and legal system, hereunder the legislation process, the division of tasks in governmental bodies, and the relationship with the EU and the EEA, as well as human rights. The students should furthermore become familiar with the main features of the courts' procedures. The course should form the necessary basis for further legal courses at NMBU.
