About this course

The course gives an introduction to technical, economical and environmental aspects of bioenergy and the use of biomass for different energy services. Included topics are:

  • Biomass resources - properties and availability
  • Biofuels, energy content and combustion
  • Technologies for biobased heat, power and fuels for transport
  • Profitability and markets for bioenergy
  • Bioenergy and the environment

Learning outcome

A candidate with a completed qualification has the following learning outcomes in the course:

Knowledge:

Good overview of value chains and technologies for bioenergy, environmental effects and the role of bioenergy in the Norwegian and in the global energy system.

The student shall have:

  • Broad knowledge about availability and cots of different biomass resources
  • Know how biomass can be converted to different energy services
  • Know how the use of biomass influence climate and nature
  • Make appraisals of energy system benefits of bioenergy
  • Be aware of global challenges and opportunities related to sustainability and bioenergy

Skills:

  • Be able to calculate energy content and efficiencies of different biofuels and technologies
  • Be able to analyse properties, costs and suitability of different biomass types
  • Be able to analyse the profitability of bioenergy technologies and projects
  • Describe the environmental effect of different bioenergy solutions

General competence:

  • The student can communicate and discuss issues related to economic, technological and climate and environmental aspects of bioenergy
  • The student must be able to communicate about academic issues that are dealt with in the course, both with specialists and to the general public

    Written exam (3 hours).

    Mandatory activity: K3 - Full use of AI.

    The use of AI is permitted, but it must comply with the Guidelines for Use of Artificial Intelligens (AI) at NMBU.

  • Examiner scheme

    The external examiner will contribute to defining the exam problem set and will assess all exam answers.
  • Mandatory activity

    Approved exercise and any excursion.
  • Teaching hours

    25 hours lectures and 12 hours exercises
  • Reduction of credits

    5 credits with FORN310.
