About this course
This course gives a basic introduction to Microsoft Excel, an essential computer tool used in businesses. When the students have learned the basic skills in Excel, the lectures will focus on Excel as a tool in Managerial Accounting.
The course gives a basic training in the use of formulas, functions and data tables.
Central themes in the course are as follows: An introduction to basic principles and methods for Managerial Accounting, and demonstrations and practical exercises in making adequate financial models. Presentation of models using formatting and graphics. Analysis and management of data, including external data, filtering and use of pivot tables.
Learning outcome
After completing the course, the student will have the following learning outcomes, divided into knowledge, skills, and general competence:
Knowledge
The student
• has knowledge of the structure of Microsoft Excel
• has knowledge of the functionality needed to build financial models
• has knowledge of the various components of Excel
• has knowledge of techniques for turning data into information
Skills
The student
• is able to up master data for use in a model - register, paste and import data
• can structure basic data - adapting formats, quality assuring, adjusting and using names
• can analyze data - four types of calculations, simple statistics, sort
• is able to present data - formatting, customizing, and creating graphs
• can use Excel's built-in table feature
• can create pivot tables
General competence
The student
• can develop efficient and structured Excel models
• is able to handle a process for transforming data to information - e.g. raw data to a graph
• can work efficiently with Excel
