About this course

The course gives a basic introduction to Microsoft Excel, an essential computer tool used in business. An important objective of the course is that the students can use Excel in other courses.

Demonstrations and practical exercises in the use of formulas and functions and data tables. Presentation of models using formatting and graphics. Analysis and management of data, including external data, filtering and use of pivot tables.

Demonstrations and practical exercises in making simple financial models.

Learning outcome

Knowledge

The student has

• knowledge of the structure of Microsoft Excel

• knowledge of the functionality needed to build financial models

• knowledge of the various components of Excel

• knowledge of techniques for turning data into information

Skills

The student is able to:

• set up master data for use in a model - register, paste and import data

• structuring basic data - adapting formats, quality assuring, adjusting and using names

• analyze data - four types of calculations, simple statistics, sort

• present data - formatting, customizing, and creating graphs

• use Excel's built-in table feature

• create pivot tables

General competency:

The student is able to:

• develop efficient and structured Excel models

• handle a process for transforming data to information - e.g. raw data to a graph

• work efficiently with Excel

  • Learning activities

    All lectures are on prerecorded videos.

    The videos are 5-30 minutes long and grouped pr week. For each week there are exercises and a quiz.

    The students are offered exercise lessons with teaching assistanses. The exercise lessons are given digitally.

  • Assessment method

    3 hours, home exam, on excel

    The help function of Excel is integrated in the software, and is not considered an aid, and may be used freely.



    Written Exam at Home Karakterregel: Passed / Not Passed
  • Examiner scheme
    External examiner will control the quality of syllabus, questions for the final examination, and principles for the assessment of the examination answers.
  • Mandatory activity

    Weekly quiz.

    The students must have 50 % correct on at least 2/3 of the quizzes to pass.

    Approved mandatory activity from a previous year remains valid upon retaking the course.
