VET400 Introduction to ethical and philosophical perspectives in biomedical research

The course is a mix of preparatory reading, lectures, discussions and student presentations.

The following books must be purchased and read before the course starts:

• National  Academy of Sciences et al. 2009. On Being a Scientist: A guide to Responsible Conduct in Research. third edition, ISBN: 978-0-309-11970-2 63 pages 
• Okasha S 2016.  Philosophy of Science: A very short introduction. Oxford University Press. ISBN: 978-0-19-874558-7

The course is for PhD and veterinary research program students that have ongoing research projects.

The discussions and report writing exercises presuppose familiarity with the syllabus. Participants must participate in discussions and hold presentations for the rest of the class. The aim is that participants express their thoughts and reflections they have in connection with their work with the subject, conversations with others, with the coursework (preparatory reading and organised learning activities) and supervision. Participants start this work during the preparatory reading by identifying philosophical and ethical questions and dilemmas of special interest to them personally. Course credit is awarded based on an inclusive qualitative evaluation emphasising the students' presentation.  The course organizer may adjust activities and will provide details while the course is running. 

AI can be used as a support tool for preparing discussions and presentations for peers, but it is essential that its use does not replace the student's own reflections and contributions. AI can be utilized to gather information, define concepts, and identify perspectives as a basis for discussion, but students must critically evaluate and supplement this with their own understanding and other relevant literature. For presentations, AI can assist in structuring and providing supporting information, but students must ensure that the content reflects their own comprehension of the topic. The use of AI must be transparent, and it should be clearly stated how AI has been used, whether for preparing discussions or creating presentations. Critical thinking and independent analysis are central, and AI should be employed as a tool, not a substitute, for the student's own work.

Preparatory reading of the syllabus and participation in course activities is compulsory, including suggestions for improving the course. An attendance record of at least 75% is required.
