About this course

The focus in the course will be dimensjoning of different industrial processes. Lectures will be given in distillation, gas absorption and stripping, drying, mechanical/physical separation methods, liquid extraction of solid material and membrane filtration. Calculations, dimensioning and energy balances will be an important part of the course. The industrial processes are chosen because they are relevant in the oil industry, chemical industry, waste water treatment and food industry.

Learning outcome

The student shall be able to calculate the physical dimensjons of industrial processes, in addition to being able to carry out mass and energy balances.
  • The course is based on a combination of lectures, calculations and self-study.
  • The teacher is available for extra support and advice during office hours, and can also be reached by telephone and e-mail.
  • MATH111 - Calculus I, MATH112 - Calculus II, FYS101 - Mechanics, FYS102 - Thermophysics and Electromagnetism, MATH113 - Linear algebra and linear differential equations, Alternative: Bachelor degree in Engineering.
  • Written exam (3 hours)

  • The external and internal examiner jointly prepare the exam questions and the correction manual. The external examiner reviews the internal examiner's examination results by correcting a random sample of candidate¿s exams as a calibration according to the Department's guidelines for examination markings.
