About this course

The course gives an overview of histories of garden art and landscape architecture and some theoretical discourses. In addition, information is provided on the rehabilitation of historical gardens.The course is structured on the basis of lectures and individual assignments.

Learning outcome

Knowledge: The student should have an overview of the most important stylistic eras in the history of garden art and their characteristics, and have an understanding of the social context and the theoretical perspectives that characterize the different phases.

Skills: The student must present subject matter in writing in a way that illuminates an issue in the history of garden art and landscape architecture. The student must be able to identify historical characteristics and discuss various works of garden art and landscape architecture as historically situated cultural expressions.

Competence: The student should be able to explain connections in the development of history and have insight into the relevance of history to current academic and societal issues and challenges.

  • Learning activities
    Literature studies, participation in lectures, sketch- and writing assignments, discussions, presentations and trips to historic gardens and landscapes.
  • Prerequisites
    LAA115 or similar competence.

    1. year M-LA.
  • Assessment method
    Assignment. Passed - not passed

  • Examiner scheme
    Assignment will be evaluated by one internal examiner.
  • Mandatory activity
    Qualification exercises and assignments (individual and in groups) in the form of e.g. sketches, discussions, feedback on the work of others, presentations and full day site visit. Compulsory activities may vary from year to year and must be completed again if the student does not complete the course and wishes to take the exam at a later date.

    Approximately 30 hours of lectures/seminars, ca 95 hours self study/self organized work with assigments
