Until April 2023, I was a professor of soil chemistry and plant nutrition. Now I am professor emeritus with a contract to work on various projects. Most of my research has been on the nutrients phosphorus and potassium in cultivated soils, plant availability tested in the laboratory and in field trials, and how to make better recommendations for availability based on chemical soil analysis. Emphasis is placed on optimizing fertilizer use to achieve the best possible quality of feed and other agricultural products while reducing the environmental impact of agricultural production as much as possible. Problems related to phosphorus levels in soil and eutrophication of water bodies are another important topic in my research.
For most of my career, I have been responsible for managing the Soil and Water Chemistry and Soil Physics Research Laboratory at NMBU.
