Current research includes:

- Endangered bird species (ortolan bunting, rustic bunting, Siberian jay, Siberian tit, corncrake, common moorhen, Eurasian coot, great crested grebe, Eurasian curlew, Northern lapwing)

- Bird communities (long-term changes in Norwegian bird communities, bird communities in urban areas, agricultural areas, boreal forest and wetlands)

- Population fluctuations and irruptions of northern boreal bird species (Northern hawk-owl, Bohemian waxwing, common redpoll, two-barred crossbill, pine grosbeak)

Previous research has included:

- Behavioural ecology (in particular sexual selection and polygyny in the pied flycatcher)

- Tropical ecology (e.g. birds in Ugandan rainforests)
