I am a veterinarian trained at Tierärztliche Hochschule Hannover in Germany and hold a PhD from the Norwegian School of Veterinary Science (1996), with a focus on methods for assessing stress and animal welfare. I am currently Professor of Animal Welfare at the Department of Production Animal Clinical Sciences, Norwegian University of Life Sciences (NMBU), where I lead the Animal Welfare Research Group. I am a European Veterinary Specialist (Diplomate) in Animal Welfare Science, Ethics and Law (Dip ECAWBM-WSEL).

My research encompasses both fundamental and applied aspects of animal welfare, with a primary focus on poultry. I develop and apply methods based on physiological, behavioural, health and production data, and I have extensive experience in project management, scientific publishing and supervision of PhD candidates.

I teach veterinary and animal nursing students in animal welfare, animal protection and ethics, and have long-standing experience in communicating research to both professional audiences and the general public. In 2013, I received the Pegasus Prize for excellence in research dissemination and student inspiration.
