I am a Professor of Animal Welfare and Animal Behaviour and leader of the Computational Ethology and Precision Animal Welfare research group at NMBU. My research specialises in the behavioural, cognitive, and physiological aspects of well-being in animals under human care, with a particular focus on production animals such as pigs and poultry. My work integrates ethological methods, digital phenotyping, and AI-based technologies to address challenges in livestock welfare, including damaging behaviours such as tail-biting and feather-pecking. I also contribute to national and international welfare policy as a member of the Norwegian National Committee for the Protection of Animals Used for Scientific Purposes (Forsøksdyrkomiteen).
Research interests: animal welfare, animal behaviour, applied ethology, digital phenotyping, artificial intelligence in animal science
Teaching responsibilities:
As course coordinator for VET353 Animal Welfare, I coordinate the teaching of animal welfare in the veterinary programme at NMBU and, in collaboration with colleagues, link the subject area to related teaching in other courses. Read more: Animal welfare in veterinary education at NMBU.
