Course contents:
Lectures and exercises will address the following issues: Economy - environment interactions, sustainable development, optimal management of renewable and non-renewable resources, pollution targets and pollution control, envirionmental policy instruments, international environmental agreements. Truthtelling and asymmetric information is at the core of the course.
The theory part of the course is joint with ECN 273. A term paper in groups on own selected topic under the heading of natural resource and environmental economics closes the course. Group size 2-3 students.
Learning outcome:
Candidates should be able to apply economic theory to analyse environmental and natural resource management issues. These issues include: economy - environment interactions, sustainable development, optimal management of renewable and non-renewable resources, pollution targets and pollution control, environmental policy instruments, and international environmental agreements.
Learning activities:
Lectures and exercises. It is recommended that students form self organized groups, for exampe 3-4 persons, and work together on the theoretial materials and exercises. Working on exercises and active participation is important for meeting the learning objectives.
The course is rounded off with a mandatory term paper in groups of 2-3 students on a self elected topic under the heading natural resource and environmental economics.

Excercise and discussion sessions. The course web pages contains pointers to background materials and news events that are related to the course contents, and make up an important source for student learning. Working on exercises and active participation is important for meeting the learning objectives. Councelling on the mandatory term paper.

Prerequisites:
Microeconomic analysis at the advanced/MSc level equivalent to ECN 311. Environmental and resource economics courses at the introductory level (ECN 170 or equivalent).
Recommended prerequisites:
General good knowledge in economics equivalent to ECN 102. Knowledge about differentiation, integration, and unconstrained and constrained optimization
Assessment:
Written examination, 3 hours (50%) around end of March/beginning of April and term paper (50%). Work on the term paper takes place in the last third of the course after the theory part is completed. To be allowed to write a term paper, the student must have passed the exam. Term paper where 2-3 students work together on a self selected topic witin the wider area of natural resource and environmental economics. Ingen konte mulighet.

300 hours.
Entrance requirements:
Minimum requirements for entrance to higher education in Norway (generell studiekompetanse).
Reduction of credits:
Joint theory part with ECN273. Students who later in their studies wants to take ECN373 gets 5 ECTS reduction for ECN273
Type of course:
6 hours per week combined lectures/excercises/discussion sessions (through March / a bit into April if early Easter) and councelling on term papers.
Note:
ECN 273 and ECN 373 has joint theory part and exam.
Examiner:
External examiner will control the quality of syllabus, questions for the final examination, and principles for the assessment of the examination answers.
