The main aim of the course is to give the students knowledge about important and current topics in insect ecology within the areas of evolution, insect-plant interactions, ecosystem functions, biodiversity and conservation. By working in groups, the students should aquire knowlegde in three different topics and present a summary for the other students from each. Following presentations, the students will work individually with a research proposal within one of the topics and review proposals written by the other students. The teachers will present the different topics and relevant methods, but most of the structured teaching will consist of group supervision and student presentations.
After completing the course the student should have gained the following qualifications:
Knowledge: The student will have in depth knowledge of central topics in ecological entomology.
Skills: The student should be able to achieve an overview of topics within insect ecology based on scientific literature and databases. The student should be able to critically reflect upon research methods and available knowledge in the discipline and be able to summarize and present relevant topics for others. The student should also be able to identify research needs, develop a project, and write a simplified research proposal. The students should also be able to assess and discuss research proposals developed by others.
General competance: The student should be confidential with core subjects within insect ecology, be able to find, assess and summarize scientific literature within specific topics, identify knowledge gaps, argue for closing these gaps and place the topic within a broader context.
The student will work in groups with three specific topics, and individually to develop one research proposal and assess others. The form of teaching will vary throughout the course, and include tutorials, contact meetings with teachers, own work and student presentations.
The candidate´s learning can be supported through academic supervision during the teacher´s office hours.
Scientific literature (in English).
The students must participate in minimum 80% of the scheduled activities
Group work with selection of literature and presentations count 40%. Individually written project application and assessment of others applications count 60%. The student have to pass both parts.
Structured teaching: approx. 50 hours. Litterature search, preparation for presentations, development of research proposals and evaluation of others proposals: approx. 250 hours
