Topics to be included are insect and arachnid morphology, occurrence in different habitats, tropic levels and importance to humans as pest and providers of ecosystem services. Insect ecology is emphasized. Identification of the most important groups of insects and arachnids are taught to order or family level on lab and field courses. Ecology, biology and sampling techniques of selected insect groups will be learned through small field project on the summer course. The students work with the projects in groups and are responsible for presentation of results.
A student that has completed the course should have learned the following:
Knowledge: The students will have knowledge about systematics, diversity, food choice and biology of insects and arachnids as well as knowledge about their function in ecosystems and importance for humans.
Skills: The student should be familiar with the various insect and arachnid groups, be able to identify to order or family level, be confident with various collecting methods and identification literature and be able to complete and present an small investigation on insects/arachnids. The student should be able to use their knowledge of insects and arachnids in a nature conservation perspective as well as in relation to damage/beneficial effects to humans in Norway.
General competence: The student should after completion of the course be familiar with the insect and arachnid taxonomy, diversity as well as their importance for ecosystems and humans in Norway.
The education is based on weekly lectures and lab courses. In addition, the students will work in groups on a small ecological project and present the results for the other students at a three days summer course. The students can test their systematic skills on available test collections of insects/arachnids.
The candidate´s learning can be supported through academic supervision during the field excursion, laboratory work and in the teacher´s office hours.

Laboratory exercises and the field course.
The exam has three parts of which two influence on the final mark a written 3-hours exam in May (multiple choice) that counts 2/3 and a taxonomic exam at the last laboratory course that count 1/3. The mark is based on the overall quality of the answers, and it is not necessary to pass both parts. In addition to the two exams, the students need to get a "pass" on the presentation of their fieldwork at the end of the field course in June.
